This English ash plan chest was designed for an artist to store large drawings, etchings and other works on paper. Inspired by traditional architect or designer’s plan chests, this piece has broad drawers with hand cut dovetails which are lined with natural cork.

The construction of the drawers is based on vintage pieces which have the drawer bottoms visible at the side of the drawers. This maximises the usable space in the drawer, and reveals the method of construction. The drawer knobs are in contrasting London plane.

The corners of the carcass are mitred so the grain of the ash continues to flow down the side panels, they are strengthened with London plane splines. Dovetail butterfly keys stabilise some small checks in the timber.
